Savor All Emotions

Last weekend John and I heard Jill Bolte Taylor speak. She’s the brain scientist who’s been on Oprah. Time magazine voted her one of the most influential people of 2008 for her best-selling book “Stroke of Insight.”

Thirteen years ago, at the age of 37, Jill had a stroke that left her unable to walk, talk, read, write or recall any of her life. She was quite close to death but remembers deciding to get well.

It took her 8 years to recover.

I mention Jill not because of her remarkable recovery, amazing as it is.

But because of what she’s come to know about positive and negative emotions and creating our reality.

Most of you know that you attract what you think about with strong emotion.  You’re aware that strongly negative attract what you don’t want instead of what you do want.

Abraham-Hicks: You Have No Choice…

Do you sometimes wish you didn’t want your big dreams, because it feels bad when you’re not living them? As I listened this morning to the most recent CD from Abraham, they spoke about how we are all made for expansion — we can’t stop wanting more.

Thus, they say: “You have no choice, if you are to be joyful, other than to let yourself go with the flow of who you have become.”

How can you go with the flow toward your expanded self? Dare to trust the Law of Attraction: when you ask it is given.

(Why study this most important of universal laws only to turn away from it when you need it the most?)

The Zen Master’s Gratitude Mantra

Are you dutifully writing out your gratitude lists and keeping your gratitude journal? OK. Check.

Are these practices bringing you to ever more gratitude and an endless upward spiral of bliss?

A Zen story (as recounted by Alan Cohen and others) goes something like this:

A Zen master taught a very simple method of enlightenment. She advised everyone who came to her to adopt a mantra to say many times a day, under all conditions.

The mantra was “Thank you for everything, I have no complaints whatsoever.”

Many who came to her were upset with this advice and left disappointed or even angry. But tradition has it that all who took this advice to heart and practiced it found grace.
