5 Steps to Break Free from the Self Sabotage Myth

Continued from Successful Self Employment News subscribe

Over the past week I heard friends and clients wonder if we unknowingly sabotage our success. It’s a common thought, but that does not  make it true.

I’ve come to believe self sabotage is a Law of Attraction myth.

How it usually operates is: you set an intention – e.g., to start an exercise program, to write one press release a month about your company, to come home from your job and spend two hours a night on your home business.

And then… “something happens.” The vet says says your dog needs tests, you take an out-of-town business trip, your parents are moving and need extra help.

Pffftt!  (That’s the sound your plans make as they evaporate).

So what’s really going on when this happens? And what can you do about it? Continue Reading »

My friend and brilliant numerologist Joanne Justis predicts a universal year of more happiness and success in 2010. I love good news!

Here’s my question to you: How will you personally step into the new year’s greater possibilities?

Law of Attraction offers infinite ways… but in many recent conversations with many of you I’ve identified the one and only key that really matters now. Continue Reading »

How To ‘Wonder’ Your Way To Success
By now nearly all of us know the importance of visioning, intending and asking the universe for what we want.
But there’s another side to the Law of Attraction: releasing.
Without releasing, it’s easy to ask, ask, ask your way into frustration. Abraham-Hicks says we get so focused on asking that we can’t hear the answer. That’s why releasing is essential.
I’m not a big fan of using releasing alone, as some methods teach. To me releasing is the yin complement to the yang of asking and intending. You need both.
Today I’m sharing with you a totally simple and easy way to release. It comes from Susan Jeffers Ph.D. in her book “Embracing Uncertainty.”
She calls it “The Wonder of Wondering.” Here’s how it works.
You have a desire, let’s say it’s to triple your income in 2010. Life unfolds and you find yourself thinking about the desire. You start out hopeful.
Then, as often happens, life seems to move you in the opposite direction. You lose a big client, let’s say.
Suddenly hope implodes into worry. Our mind becomes obsessed with what else could go wrong.
In those moments, Jeffers advises we retrain our over-thinking mind by wondering.
Instead of thinking “I hope I get a replacement client soon,” think: “I wonder what good things are coming to me to re-balance my income.”
Instead of thinking “I hope my prayers for more income are answered,” think “I wonder how my prayers for more income will be answered.”
Wonder helps replace frantic thinking with a sense of openness. It gives you a sense of relief. And curiosity. Even acceptance of where you are now.
When we feel relief, curiosity and acceptance we’ve released our resistance (aka stress) about what we want. We align with receiving it!
Here’s a tip from me about wonder that’s not in the book. I recommend you frame your wondering positively.
This: “I wonder whether the networking meeting will be fun and worthwhile.”
Not this: “I wonder whether the networking meeting will be a waste of my time.”
Ideally you want the conclusion of your statement (without the “I wonder” beginning) to express a positive message or affirmation.
That’s because the unconscious mind is always listening to us and being programmed by our words. “The networking meeting will be a waste of my time” is not the ideal programming!
Keep in mind it’s not about writing affirmative statements. They tend to backfire when we don’t see the evidence. It’s important to include the “I wonder” element up front.
Sure you’d prefer a certain outcome – that’s natural. But wondering helps prevent disappointment in case you don’t receive it right away.
As you continue to be in wonder about your desires, you continue releasing stress, becoming a match to what you’ve intended.
Hmm…I wonder whether the frequent use of “I wonder” is the secret to creating a “wonderful” life!
Till next time, here’s to your successful self employment.

The bold declaration isn’t mine. I’m borrowing from Thich Nhat Hanh, the expatriate Vietnamese Buddhist monk now living and working in France.

His latest book, “You Are Here,” was just translated and published in English. It’s a gem.

I was surprised to learn Thich Nhat Hanh’s birth year: 1926. For 83 years he has blessed us.

Thich Nhat Hanh states in chapter 1 that “Happiness and Peace are Possible.” Good news, right?

Only… they have nothing to do with the circumstances around you.

What about the Law of Attraction? Doesn’t it teach we can have what we want?

Actually, the Law of Attraction teaches that we have the power to choose our response under and any all circumstances.

Thich Nhat Hanh and LoA might have more in common than we think!

If you love the idea of choosing peace and happiness  - regardless of which way the tide of external events flows at the moment – let this book guide you.

It asks that you drop your attachment to having things stay (or return to) the way you like them.

We call our times “turbulent.” They are. A storm is sweeping through. You have the choice to cling to the way things were. Listen to most news media, and that’s their mournful wail.

Your 21-Day Freedom Plan – Part 3

Today we look at Part 3 (Day 15-21) of the Plan: From Powerful Action to Peaceful, Abundant Receiving
If you’re just joining the 21-day Freedom Plan discussion, find previous SSE News articles reprinted on my blog at www.andreaconway.com
To resume our story…Don was one of my Inner Circle members who just couldn’t break free of analyzing and re-analyzing his new business long enough to actually start it.
As we discovered in Part 1, what lay beneath Don’s analysis paralysis was his fear of making the wrong choice. Once he observed his fear and saw it was nothing more than a thought, he moved into possibility.
In Part 2, Don moved from possibility into the stillness that precedes powerful action. There          he could hear his soul’s inspiration and knew what actions to take.
However – knowing what actions to take is not the same as taking them!
Sometimes the idea of taking action re-triggers the fear. Don felt a strong inspiration to create a blog and several articles. He noticed that the idea of stepping out publicly on the Internet caused fear to kick in.
I could relate! In 2002 when launching the SSE website, I felt completely vulnerable and uncomfortable. Yet these last 7 years have been the most expansive and fulfilling of my life.
Make a note: it’s totally normal to experience fear whenever we step out of our comfort zone.
Scared? OK. Then what? Like Don you can learn to notice, observe, and decide to choose stillness. You can make a habit of listening to your soul in that stillness. And you can decide to take the powerful actions your soul calls you to.
Many spiritual entrepreneurs I talk to expect fear to disappear from their lives. “Won’t life be permanent playtime when I follow my soul?” Nope…
Not until you understand that fear is always going to return when you step into being bigger than you’ve ever been before.
Not until you decide that fear is simply a signal you are about to express more of your soul          potential. Wow. You might even decide to feel excited when fear shows up.
Fear is a sign that expansion possibilities are here.
The key when afraid is to consistently re-choose your connection to spirit. When you do, you find the spiritual courage to take powerful action. Then you experience peaceful, abundant receiving.
This week’s plan
1 – Continue to observe fear (or doubt, worry or other negative emotion) when it shows up. Step back and observe: notice you are separate from the fear thoughts your mind thinks. Observation is a new habit you are forming. After 21 days it becomes as second nature as brushing your teeth. If you practice!
2 – Continue to ask your soul (inner being, angels, higher self, Source energy — whatever term you use) to send you inspiration about any area of your life and business that you’d like help with.
As steps 1 and 2 become your lifelong habits, you naturally step into receiving inspiration.
3 -Commit to taking action on the inspiration you receive. Small actions count too: the main          thing is to act.
Stay aware (step 1) so that you don’t act from the vibration of “feel the fear and do it anyway” — LoA will then send you more fears to overcome. That is doing it the hard way!
Instead, keep reinforcing your connection to spirit (step 2) so that you act from the vibration of trust and inspiration.
4 – Let go of your expectations around results. You’re courting frustration when you act on inspiration with a certain result in mind. You may even feel like giving up if the specific result you want doesn’t show up.
If you’re in resistance (you can tell because you feel negative emotion), manifestation slows to a crawl.
Your work is to act from trust without expectation. You will receive in abundance. Your success is guaranteed. But not necessarily how and when you expect.
In creating or expanding a business (or any other heart-inspired endeavor), the universe looks for commitment.
Success comes to those who commit from the start. Even before they are successful in the eyes of the world.
Note, please: the  universe does not withhold success because it is mean or to “test” you.
Rather, the universe always gives us a loving opportunity to move past old beliefs.
The bigger our dream, the more old beliefs we may need to shed. Delays are simply indicators we have more old beliefs about success and money to clear out on our path of expansion.
Let’s choose to be at peace about the timing of success, instead of in frustration.
Guy Finley tells the story of a butterfly talking with a very wise old tree. The tree seems to completely understand the butterfly’s frustration with life –  stuck and unhappy. The butterfly is amazed by the old tree’s ability to empathize. Finally the tree explains the butterfly’s problem as kindly as it can: “You aren’t yet a butterfly. You are still a caterpillar.”
Sometimes we business owners expect to fly immediately. Let’s experiment with accepting that inching toward the goal might be enough for the moment.
5. Notice the abundance of whatever the universe sends you. Be at peace with it. Believe in          divine timing and do your best. There is no way a caterpillar can willfully transform into a butterfly. But in the course of living its most sincere life there will come a time of divine transformation.
Do you think your blessed human life is any less divinely led than the caterpillar’s? Trust that your desires to fly will be fulfilled.
Till next time, here’s to your successful self employment!
