It’s time to give up the war with our inner critic.

It’s fascinating to me that we all want world peace and loving relationships, yet we continue to tolerate war in our own minds.  War against ourselves.

Have you noticed that the war against terrorism isn’t increasing the amount of peace and security in the world?

That’s because pushing against what you don’t want just makes it stronger, and the Law of Attraction keeps matching you with conflict and insecurity. Hmmm…

And so it goes when we allow our inner critic to make mental war against us: we’re matched with more and more self criticism.

“I don’t have enough money.” “I don’t think I’m good enough to be successful.” “I’m too [inexperienced/old/uneducated/young/worried/incompetent/blah-blah-blah] to get what I want.”

What to do when you notice your inner critic blasting away at you?

Get out of the line of fire. Stand back and allow yourself simply to notice what your critic says without either feeling crushed by it or trying to fight back.

Be neither defensive nor offensive. Simply stand back. “Be still.” (Breathing is also a good idea.)

The inner critic has no life other than what we give it. It’s created out of thoughts we had, often from our earliest years, in response to what people in authority told us.

If mommy said you were bad for leaving your toys scattered all over the floor, here you are 20, 30, 40 or more years later still calling yourself messy and disorganized.

Doesn’t make a lot of sense, does it?

What you discover if you simply stand back and allow your inner critic to spew is that you separate from it.

You notice how predictable, how mechanical, its voice is.

Keep observing, and you notice that the critic isn’t really you, but the ghost of an old habit. It’s a phantom.

Then, when there’s nothing to fight against, peace arises within, naturally, because peace is who we really are.
