Savor All Emotions

Last weekend John and I heard Jill Bolte Taylor speak. She’s the brain scientist who’s been on Oprah. Time magazine voted her one of the most influential people of 2008 for her best-selling book “Stroke of Insight.”
Thirteen years ago, at the age of 37, Jill had a stroke that left her unable to walk, talk, read, write or recall any of her life. She was quite close to death but remembers deciding to get well.
It took her 8 years to recover.
I mention Jill not because of her remarkable recovery, amazing as it is.
But because of what she’s come to know about positive and negative emotions and creating our reality.
Most of you know that you attract what you think about with strong emotion. You’re aware that strongly negative attract what you don’t want instead of what you do want.
That’s all true, but it’s got most of you in a quandary.
As soon as you feel anger or frustration or resentment, you rush to squelch or cover up those feelings with a positive thought.
Trouble is, covering up your negative feelings doesn’t change them. And the Law of Attraction keeps responding to them.
Jill Bolte Taylor takes another approach. She doesn’t squelch or cover up her negative feelings. She mentally steps back and observes them.
She loves all her emotions because they remind her she’s still here in a marvelous human body and still free to choose what she wants next.
“Savor ALL emotions,” she told us. “Because emotions mean you’re alive.”
According to Jill, it takes approximately 90 seconds for you to have a negative thought, which spawns a negative emotion, which then manifests in your body (as tightness, tension, pain etc.).
By mentally stepping back and observing the cycle, she “doesn’t get engaged in it.”
We all have negative thoughts and emotions. If I understand Jill correctly, they takes 90 seconds to express. Where we go wrong is we judge ourselves for having them, fear the consequences we imagine they will cause, and struggle with how to get rid of them.
All of that mental busy-ness only extends the negativity.
It’s called: wallowing in it. (I’m not immune to this either.)
Savor ALL emotions. Stand back and watch them flow through.
When you observe emotions instead, you find that underneath any troubling feeling lies your essential, eternal happiness.
